What is a VPN Connection?

My manager says i need to have a vpn connector to get my email. What is that and where do I buy one?

Answer:

What is a VPN Connection?

A VPN connection or Virtual private network connection will allow you to access software information and resources outside of your local network. For example your home computer is located on one network. This network is separate from your office network. It is possible that you may need to make a VPN connection to the office in order to retrieve email from a server that is located at the office. A good way to think of a VPN connection is like a bridge. It connects two separate networks together when you need to access information between the networks.

Sonicwall, Microsoft, Cisco and other Networking companies make VPN software to achieve this. You will likely need to install a piece of software from your network administrator to accomplish this, I would speak with them to point you in the right direction.

Answer:

What is a pps File?

Â

A pps file is a PowerPoint Slidshow file. This file is just like a ppt file. It is a series of slides that make for a presentation. This should open in Microsoft PowerPoint, a component of Microsoft Office. If you are unable to open the file make sure that you have powerpoint installled. If you don’t Microsoft offers a free tool here to allow you to view presentations on a computer that does not have a full version of powerpoint installed. You might also check out open office as a free option in place of the Microsoft Office Suite HERE. Open Office will be able to handle that file type as well.

Answer:

What is pishing on the internet?

Phishing: In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames

More or less it is the use of a application or a look a like website to trick you into entering information somewhere you should not be entering information.

For example you get a fake email form a phisher with a link to a MySpace look alike site with a intriguing message like ‘look at these pictures of you I found’ the site is not myspace.com though it looks like it. You attempt to login, and your information is transferred to the phisher.

Phishing has become increasingly prevalent in the last two years, always check the address that you are visiting before logging in. make sure it says the name of the site you think you are at!

Macbook Pro running Boot camp, what’s wrong?

I have recently installed bootcamp on my Macbook pro. My computer is updated etc. I installed windows vista premium home edition. On the mac side I can connect wirelessly fine. However on my Windows side, it shows no connection whatsoever. It does not even show the available wireless connetion in the area. What is the proper step to get the windows side to connect wirelessly to the internet.

Answer:

Macbook Pro running Boot camp, what’s wrong?

It sounds like you have gotten really far already….Grats… that said I am guessing that you are missing a driver on the windows side. apple uses standard hardware and all the drivers that you need are included in the os install. The first thing i would do is insert the leopard disk and run the boot camp driver install from the windows operating system. The boot camp CD contains all the drivers and software you need to get your windows operating system working as you would expect.

if you have done this, all you have to do to connect to wi fi is go to start> connect to> this will show all the wireless networks in range of your computer. Click the name that corresponds to the network that you own. If the network is security enabled it will prompt you for a network key. this was set up when you first installed your router. Enter the key and away you go. Hope this helps!

Answer:

I have internet connection but my internet explorer does not connect, what’s wrong?

First reset internet explorer. This will default all the settings incase something went wrong
Go to start>control panel>internet options > advanced > click the ‘reset’
If this does not work make sure you do not have a firewall configured to block either the application ‘iexplore.exe’ or port 80. You can test this by temporarily disabling your firewall software. To disable windows firewall go start>run> and type “netsh firewall set opmode disable” without the quotes.

How many 100 Kilobyte images can be saved on a 1 Megabyte storage device?

9.

1mb = 1024kb (formatting any device causes you to loose about 5% or the total space due to block sectoring and file-system allocation.) Effectively you are left with 972.8 kb(1024*.95).

Now it is just the price is right; closest without going over.
9*100 < 972.8
10*100 > 972.8

(ou will be able to fit 9 100k images on a standard 1mb storage device.

Answer:

Can I Use Mac Software on a PC?

Unfortunately you can’t install apple applications on windows. You can install microsoft office on windows though. both pages and keynote have the ability to export files into office compatible formats for msword (.doc…like pages) and powerpoint (.ppt…like keynote). to do this go to in pages or keynote go to pages/keynote (in the task bar)> export > and in the dialog box pick the appropriate windows compatible format. Additionally if you need to edit these files in Windows, and do not want to by the microsoft office suite you can download and install open office. Open office is a free microsoft office alternative, it will open and edit doc files and ppt files. http://www.openoffice.org/

Is there really a difference in sound quality in these portable music gadgets? Is Apple really better than Microsoft in terms of music quality? Can we really tell?

Answer:

Is Apple better than Microsoft in terms of music quality in their products?

Y The sound quality will not differ between products. They all output the same music. The differences are the features that they support and the interfaces that they use. iPods iPhones and istuff use iTunes. iTunes is a very easy to use interface for buying transferring and organizing music on your device. Microsoft uses Windows Media Player and other applications to transfer music to their devices. The interface for these tends to not be as intuitive. The only other difference is the type of files that the devices are capable of playing back. This might be a consideration if you have a large number of files in a particular format. see below. For the best sound quality though your really want a good pair of headphones and good bitrate music for MP3 music look for at least 320 bit rate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3 .Â

Why doesn’t everyone install the 64 bit since its better (so we can profit of the extra ram if we have it)? I have bought a new Intel original core 2 Quad 2.8 GHz with 8 GB ram DDR2… Can I install windows vista 64 bit?

Answer:

What’s the difference between windows vista 32bit and 64bit?

Short answer is the instruction code. More or less 32 bit operating systems can push smaller chunks of data through the bus at a time. A 64 bit operating system can push larger chunks of data through the bus and has more address locations, thus allowing you to use more ram and advanced hardware. The issue is that in order to take advantage of 64 bit operating system you need an application that is 64 bit enabled. Most applications are compatible and optimized for x64 now, and the ones that are not will still run in a ‘compatibility’ mode for 32 bit. You should have no issue installing vista64 on that hardware, you will also have the ability to address that amount of RAM.

I currently have mcafee on pc, is it OK to use malwarebytes too?

I was hacked so I want to know if malware bytes is ok when I still have mcaffee because I want EXTRA HELP so that little jerk never comes back.

Answer:

I currently have mcafee on pc, is it OK to use malwarebytes too?

Yes, mcafee takes care of virus infections, malware bytes helps clean up spyware and adware. There is no conflict by installing them both on the same computer. In-fact they complement each other nicely. Make sure you update malware bytes to the latest definitions and the run a ‘full scan’ reboot if it tells you to. That should fix most all popups, toolbars, and strange stuff. BUT the thing most people forget is that you are likely still vulnerable to reinfection unless you have all the latest security patches. Do windows updates as soon as possible and on a regular basis to help protect your computer in the future.
